Bar Alba

Piazza Don Bosco 7C Cuisines: Italian

About

This bar has been a Palermo institution since 1955. We were still in college when we were first taken here to sample cassata Siciliana on native soil. This is the famous regional dessert of candied fruit, marzipan, and sponge cake -- it's a delight if you're not afraid of a diabetic coma. The homemade ice creams deserve an award, especially the creations made with pistachio, and the frutta di Martorana (fruits made of almond paste) will dazzle you. You can also go whole hog on savory dishes -- their arancine (rice ball with ham and cheese), a typical Sicilian specialty, is the best in town. The location is at the top of Via della Libertà, near the entrance to La Favorita Park.
