Farol Museu de Santa Marta

Rua do Farol de Santa Marta

About

The Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum perches on a rocky outcrop just outside the town centre, near the marina. Dating from 1868, the structure is a well-known navigational reference point with its blue and white tiled façade and cherry red beacon. Still in use today, the lighthouse is fully automated. The small, integrated museum unit showcases the history, heritage, science and technology of lighthouses. A neighbouring auditorium exhibits a fascinating multilingual documentary The Lighthouses of Portugal – 5 Centuries of History. Visitors can climb to the top of the tower and are rewarded with sweeping views of the marina, the Lisbon coast and the distant Serra de Sintra.
