About

In the years 1941-1942, the building at no. 1 at the Podgórski Market Square (Rynek Podgórski 1) was the seat of the Jewish Council (Judenrat), founded and managed by the German occupiers. Also here, on the corner where Limanowskiego Street met the Podgórze Market Square the ghetto's main gate (1941-1943) was situated, bearing an inscription Jidiszer wojnbezirk (which is Yiddish for "Jewish residential quarter", as Germans persistently avoided the word "ghetto").
