About

In this place stood the former school building of the Talmud Torah Association, in which Dr Aleksander Bieberstein set up in 1940 a Contagious Diseases Hospital, which remained in the ghetto after 1941. During the deportation in June 1942, the hospital workers gave shelter to about 350 people (the sick were not subject to deport then). After the area of the ghetto had been reduced in June 1942, the hospital was moved to the building at 3 Zgody Square. All of its patients were shot in March 1943 during the liquidation of the ghetto – the building's wall still bears marks made by bullets.
