About

Set inside a courtyard of shops and cafes just off Silom Road near the expressway, Aalto Kitchen is a welcome option in the varied Bangkok dining scene. Traditional Finnish dishes -- such as Karelian pies (rice porridge rye pasties), meat stews, and gravlax share menu space with other Scandinavian options as well as a decent Thai menu. Dense Finnish pancakes are marvelous for dessert and the beef meatballs are exceptional. Owners Juha Granfors and Sami Heikkinen have provided a pleasant atmosphere and made a commitment to quality ingredients. This is a good setting for exploring a cuisine sometimes overlooked. Prices are very reasonable which is not always the case for foreign food in Bangkok, and the drink list -- which includes Finnish vodka (of course), various ciders, and Gin Long Drink (the national mixer) -- makes an excuse to get here early for dinner. Breakfast options are served all day. Credit cards are not accepted at this time. Aalto Kitchen puts Finland firmly on Bangkok's food map.
