The Heritage Museum located in Senghenydd Community Centre has been in Existence for several years. It is run voluntarily, with the help of a part-time project officer, through the support of many dedicated volunteers who ensure that the museum is open to the public, free of charge, between 11am and 2pm Monday to Saturday. A member of Caerphilly Tourism Association - working together to promote tourism The Museum is dedicated to the rich heritage of the Aber Valley in Caerphilly, with a particular emphasis on the two mines (The Universal Colliery in Senghenydd and the Windsor Colliery in Abertridwr) which once dominated the Valley. In particular the community have donated a great many photographs along with a vast array of artefacts and memorabilia all of which are on display in the various display cabinets and on the two inter-active touch screens. Many of the displays relate to the mining disasters experienced by this small community, with 81 miners having been killed in the first Universal Colliery Disaster in 1901 followed in 1913 by the explosion which claimed the lives of 439 miners and one rescuer. The volunteers have also acquired several fascinating and moving films relating to this disaster, all of which can be viewed at the Heritage Museum. However, the project is ever expanding and has developed displays on other aspects of the area’s heritage, including the village’s contribution to the World Wars and its links with its sporting past. Tea and coffee can be provided for visitors. There is also access to toilet facilities (including disabled toilets). There is adequate street parking for visitors using cars. The project is also situated on a bus route from the town of Caerphilly for those wishing to use public transport. Groups are welcome (please give prior warning if possible).The museum also sells local history books (including ‘The Valley of the Shadow’ which gives a thorough account of the 1901 and 1913 explosions. In addition there are a range of gifts on sale, including some hand crafted cards and locally made jams and pickles.For visitors unable to come to the Heritage Museum during its opening times special prior arrangements can be made to open the Museum at other more suitable times by contacting the project officer or volunteers on (02920) 830444/5.
