For an eating experience with a difference, follow the Santa Teresa tramline up from Largo do Guimaraes (the neighborhood's main square) past the little white castle on the hill to the little stretch of road that sees several little bars and restaurants sitting side by side. From Thursdays through Sundays, you'll also find Nega Teresa setting up her stall. A local institution, the white-clad Nega Teresa sells delicious Bahian dishes from beneath a dangling chandelier. Her speciality is acaraje - bean flour patties fried in palm oil and filled with shrimp, chopped tomatos, spicy pepper sauce and a kind of thick paste made with okra. Bring along beers or wine and pull up a seat beside the stall as you wait for your order.
