Alexandria Library

Since the city of Alexandria became a city of learning during the ancient times, a visit at their library at El Shatby, Al-Iskandariyya,should be part of your itinerary. Founded during 3rd century BC, by Ptolemy, the library contained 700,000 books already. The Alexandria library was the first public library in history and acted as the center for science and culture for centuries but it was burned down in 48BC. The library was reopened only in 2002 with the aid of UNESCO.
