About

Ananda Ranga Pillai House is one of the oldest buildings in the town. Doubtlessly a must-visit attraction, this house belongs to Ananda Ranga Pillai- a courtier of Joseph Francois Dupleix (former French governor of Pondicherry). Built in the year 1735, this building flaunts a flawless blend of Asian and European architecture styles. The building's ground floor, featuring a spacious courtyard with wooden pillars, resemblances to a typical Tamil house. On the building's first floor, there is a terrace that exhibits European Gothic design. Although many buildings were ransacked by the British when they conquered Pondicherry in the year 1761, this building remained unharmed.
