About

Starting in autumn 2013, Amsterdam’s Nieuwe Kerk goes on a breathtaking odyssey into China’s distant past with an exhibition dedicated to one of the country’s most illustrious dynasties. MING: Emperors, Artists & Merchants in Ancient China runs from 5 October 2013 to 2 February 2014.MING in the spotlightIn collaboration with China’s Nanjing Museum, the church offers visitors a glimpse of an exclusive collection of original Ming-era artefacts that include calligraphies, porcelain crafts and luxury items originally designed for the Imperial Court.A dynasty that echoes through the agesThe Ming Dynasty began in 1368 with Zhu Yuanzhang, the emperor who conquered the Mongolian clans that had dominated China for nearly a century. The historical period that followed was defined by major achievements in culture, trade, and the arts. The Nieuwe Kerk’s exhibition will follow the dynasty's trajectory and examine its legacy, which continues to influence China’s national identity in the 21st century. Keep your eyes peeled for one of the highlights; a series of life-sized portraits that were once used by the Chinese court to welcome guests.[Image: Portrait of He Bin.
