About

The State Theatre Museum started in 1890s, when Alexsey Bakhrushin, a major Moscow industrialist and founder of the Russian Theatre Society, began his collection of all things related to the stage. On October 29 of 1894 the collection was opened to the public and a theatre museum, the first of its kind in the world, came into existence. The Bakhrushin State Theatre Museum charts the history of all kinds of stage art forms from the very beginnings right up until the present day. The museum funds and archives consist of 1,500,000 items related to the famous actors, singers, ballet dancers, composers and artists. One of the museum's galleries is dedicated to the famous Russian opera singer Fedor Shalyapin, who graced the stages of the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky theatres at the beginning of the 20th century.
