Balintawak Monument

Caloocan City, Philippines

About

The Bonifacio Monument in the middle of the rotunda in Caloocan is now considered one of the most important landmarks in the country. It was designed by National Artist for Sculpture 1973. Guillermo Tolentino and was completed in 1933 replacing the original monument by the sculptor Ramon Martinez, which was unveiled on September 3, 1911, in Balintawak (it has since been transferred and now stands in front of Vinzon Hall in U.P. Diliman. The Tolentino-designed monument became controversial because the image of Bonifacio ran counter to the original concept of him wielding a bolo in the traditional camisa de chino attire and barefoot. In this Tolentino monument, Bonifacio, carried a gun and was attired in a closed barong tagalog and wearing shoes. But this "new" concept was amply defended by the artist through his diligent researches.
