About

The Baltimore Wooden Boat Festival is an annual celebration for everyone who likes traditional boats! Vessels from near and far, sailors, boat builders and visitors gather together for events on land and on the water, enjoying the sight of races under sail and oar. Don't miss the unique Carbery Challenge where people build a boat on Saturday and sail and row it on Sunday! The traditional Yawls from Roaring Water Bay are joined by Bantry Longboats, Galway Hookers, Cornish Luggers, Cork Harbour 1 Designs, and Castletown Ettes to name a few. The festival begins with Curraghs and Limerick Gandalows racing down the Ilen River from Skibbereen to Baltimore. A great favourite is the re-enactment of a traditional Pilot Race, with a 'Pilot' rowed out towards Sherkin Island to board a ship under sail. Events on land include demonstrations of boat building, lobster pot making, and displays and talks, with children's model boat making and crab fishing. The Baltimore Seafood Festival takes place on Sunday and provides an opportunity to sample some of the best local food in stalls on the pier and in the pubs.
