The long-running Ban Khun Mae recently underwent a renovation, but alas it's another case of pak chee roi naa. Physically it's quite nice: the place is welcoming and warm with its traditional-meets-modern Thai charm. Not a single annoying Siam Square kid in sight, only greying Thai couples and and tourists enjoying the food and the live kim performance by a woman in classic Thai dress. Unfortunately, you can barely hear the music over the din of the diners, who seem to care more about their conversations than the food. Which is fine, because it's nothing to write home about. Tourists we can understand what they're doing here, but a lot of (mostly older) Thais eat here, also, and they should know better. The fat menu is impressive and contains a lot of traditional dishes that you no longer see in most ordinary Thai restaurants.
