Barabar Caves, known for the architectural beauty, are located at a distance of 25 km from Gaya. Developed in the second century BC, these caves were carved during the first phase of development of Buddhism. The caves made out of rocks are deep and are finely cut. According to Buddhist literature, these caves were meant for Ajivika Buddhists.Having fine glassy and shining polish, these caves are divided into three types. Out of the three types, one of them is Nagarjuna caves, while the other two caves are caves of Pandavas and Hut caves.Situated on the Nagarjuna Hills, the Nagarjuna caves are two in number, namely Sudama and Chaupar. According to chronicles of history, these hill caves were constructed during the era of grandson of Ashoka
