Basgo Monastery is a famous Buddhist monastery in Leh District of Jammu and Kashmir. The monastery is situated on top of a hill towering over the ruins of the ancient town and is noted for its Buddha statue . In early times of Ladakh, the monastery not only was a seat of power of Namgyal rulers but also a political and cultural center. Aside from the famous Buddha statue it houses, the monastery is also noted for its display of 16th century murals and other arts.Strategically located where the Indus turns into a gorge, Basgo Monastery stands tall on a hill, its ruined temples and fortifications rising dramatically into the sky.
