Blauer Bock

Höllgasse 20 Cuisines: European

About

Set in the heart of Passau, adjacent to the Danube, this nostalgia-laden building was constructed in 1374 and is one of the oldest buildings in town. Part of its allure derives from a woodsy, dark-paneled interior that reeks of 19th-century coziness. This, coupled with a riverside terrace with 250 seats, replete with views of the passing river traffic, makes it a great choice for a snack, meal, or drink. Menu items are simple, traditional, and straightforward. The best examples include Leberknödel (liver-dumpling) soup and pork shank, slow-cooked for hours, served with a local version of dumplings and sauerkraut. A tasty and time-tested main course, prepared only for two diners at a time, is a roasted and pickled leg of pork with sauerkraut, potatoes, and dumplings. At least four kinds of beer, each brewed within the city limits of Passau by any of several local brewers, are available on tap at any time. Bottled beers from the town's other local brewers are also available. Also on the premises are four simple, conservatively decorated bedrooms, each with minibar and TV, and renting for 65€ to 88€ ($104-$141) double, 89€ to 130€ ($142-$208) triple. Laundry service and room service are also available.
