Café Artist

In the Scandic Winn Cuisines: French

About

We have this thing for restaurants named Café Artist or Cafes des Artistes. But it's not just the name in this case -- the cuisine draws us here time and time again. Simply put, the chefs consistently serve the best food in town at this restaurant in the previously recommended Scandic Winn hotel. Its culinary finesse is more obvious at nighttime than at lunch. The setting contains lots of 19th-century pine-wood antiques and carefully finished paneling, which creates a cozy glow of old-fashioned well-being. The only option at lunchtime is a copious buffet attended by many of the town's office workers, who select from a generous medley of fish, meats, soups, salads, and vegetarian dishes. Evening meals are more elaborate, with well-choreographed service and menu items that include well-prepared olive-and-feta-stuffed chicken with herbs, garlic, and potato pie; filet of lamb with sage; or an alpine char with a white-wine sauce. A dessert favorite is homemade vanilla ice cream with a compote of warm cloudberries.
