Cerro Santa Lucia Handicrafts Market

Av. Bernardo O'Higgins 499

About

Across the street from Cerro Santa Lucía, where the city was founded, there is a modern crafts fair perfect for buying souvenirs for friendds and family back home. Much of what is for sale here is fairly standard, woolen altiplanic sweaters, keychains and the like but if you dig, you can find some lovely silkscreened bags, handmade purses, indie shoes, and of course, you can have your ears or nose pierced in between shopping options. Every year the selection changes a bit, with melted, fused glass barettes, pendants and earrings being the rage these days, and brightly-painted wooden plaques also proving popular. There's easy metro access (Metro Santa Lucía), and a really good juice place hidden inside. And be sure to check out the Cerro itself, which is right across the street. You can begin climbing it by heading up the curving staircase of the yellow building visible from the crafts fair, or walk along the hill keeping it to your right to take the elevator part way up.
