Chatta Chowk

Chandni Chowk, New Delhi, DL, India

About

Chatta Chowk (Covered Bazaar) is the first bazaar with a roof built in the 17th century in the realms of the Red Fort. A covered bazaar was unheard-of in India during the rule of Emperor Shah Jahan. The Emperor instructed Mukarmat Khan to build a covered market in Delhi as he  thought that the covered marketplace would suit the hot temperatures of Delhi. It is believed that at that time, this bazaar accommodated the luxury trade of the royally household, and traded rugs, exquisite carpets, jajams and shatranjis, quilts, etc.
