Misty mountains, cavernous caves, forest temples overgrown by jungle, it takes only an hour to reach Chiang Dao from Chiang Mai but on arrival, you will feel as though you have travelled back in time. Located on route 107 beyond Mae Rim and Mae Tang, Chiang Dao is a magnificent mountain area offering a range of sights and activities that surprisingly remain largely off the beaten track. Most visitors head first to the caves located beneath Chiang Dao Mountain, Thailand's third highest peak. A beautiful aqua marine pool fed from the deep inside the mountain along with decorated with mysterious looking ornaments, greets visitors on arrival. The cave system has some lighting but pay a few Baht and a guide will take you further through the extensive cave system with a lamp. Be prepared to squeeze through some small spaces, claustrophobic's don't bother. While you will see things one would expect to see in a cave - bats, impressive stalactites and stalagmites - you will also see an important Buddhist temple along with some ancient Buddhist statues.
