Ranking among the city's major landmarks is the Lutheran church of St. Michael. Built in the early 17th century, the church continues to signify strength after having gone through a series of destructive instances: lightning in 1661, fire in 1906, and the two World Wars. Thanks to a couple of renovations, the tower now holds out sweeping views of the city, and still manages to play host to a 300-year old tradition of a trumpet player, playing hymns, facing all directions.
