Clematis

Strandgatan 20

About

Is it a museum or a restaurant Imbued with a medieval atmosphere, this summer-only spot has been a tourist favorite since it opened in the late 1980s. Medieval feasts, accompanied by jesters, musicians, and fire-eaters, are the standard here, and can be arranged for special parties during December. At times, the costumed staff breaks into medieval tunes while serving the food. Yes, it's all so very campy, but fun, good only if you're in the mood. The building itself is from the 13th century, and all the props are either real or copies from excavations on Gotland. You are given a flat slab of bread instead of a plate, accompanied by a jug of red wine or a cellar-cooled beer. The only eating utensil is a knife -- no forks allowed. Begin with such old-fashioned dishes as salt-pork dumplings or else smoked flounder, and follow with such favorites as a whole chicken stuffed with prunes and apples, or marinated and grilled pork on the bone with honey-fried carrots and turnips. Instead of ordering a la carte, you can also select a full medieval banquet that includes the likes of apples, nuts, candied rose petals, smoked leg of lamb, sausages, honey-fried cabbage, lamb chops, spareribs, and dessert.
