About

The great racing legacy bestowed by Cork, is that it was the scene of the original steeplechase race, a wager made in 1752, between two sporting Cork gentlemen, as to which of the two had the better horse. What followed was a four and a half mile race between two churches (hence the ‘steeples’) and the term remains firmly in racing lexicon today. Cork has all the benefits of a major city without the stress and strains of city living and nowhere is this relaxed attitude more evident than at its celebrated racecourse in Mallow. With organised racing in the region dating back as far as 1777, it’s safe to say they’ve had plenty of experience. Todays racecourse, in spite of recent modernisation, retains its atmosphere of laid back enjoyment and warm Cork welcomes.Racing at Cork is a mix of quality jump and flat racing, with mixed cards taking precedence in summer and all jumps in winter. Why not visit at Easter time and get the best of both worlds, top quality flat and jump racing over the three days (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) of the holiday weekend. What a great way to spend a break.
