Cross Country Skiing in the Prater

Prater Hauptallee

About

Viennese folk like to take excursions or play sports in the Prater. They are allowed to do this since Joseph II kindly opened the area to everyone in 1766, previous to which it was a hunting ground for the aristocracy. If there is enough snow, you can go cross country skiing just a few stops on the train away from the Center at Stephansplatz. A good route is to follow the Hauptallee to the Lusthaus and then come back. The flat ground allows you to find a good rhythm. Alas, there is no ski rental.
