About

The architectural history of Maitland can be explored on foot using the heritage walks developed by the Maitland Visitors Information Centre. The city of Maitland's many restored and heritage protected buildings date from as far back as the 1820's and serve as monuments to the pioneering days, when white settlers endeavoured to make their mark on the Hunter Valley's beautiful natural landscapes. The East Maitland Heritage Walk takes two and a half hours to walk, or twenty minutes to drive. Attractions include Caroline Chisholm's cottage (1840), St. Peter's Church of England (1886) and 27 other old buildings and sites.Informative maps giving the history of buildings can be obtained from the Maitland Visitors Centre, on the corner of New England Highway and Les Darcy Drive, Maitland.
