About

In 1613, Friedrich V. married Elisabeth Stuart in London, daughter of the English King Jacob I. and Mary Stuart's grand-daughter. He honored his beloved consort on many opportunities: on her birthday in 1615, he had a Gate erected in the Artillery Garden, as legend goes, overnight. It was designed by the French garden architect Salomon de Caus who later also styled the Castle Garden. On the south side it is richly decorated, based on four pillars that are adorned with ivy squirrels, lizards, and beetles. Two figures are holding 'horns of plenty' and flowers, followed by two lions with the Imperial Orb. The back, however, is completely plain, presumably the gate was covered with plants on the sides and the back. Admission to the Artillery Garden is free.
