IGLESIA DE JESÚS CHURCHS DESCRIPTION First historical notice kept on the temple dedicated to Virgin Mary of Jesús goes back to 1466. University juries had applied for authorisation from the Tarragona Archbishop so that mass could be held on Sundays at the church which was then being built on “Pla de Vila de la Verge Maria de Jesús”. The exact date on which the church was blessed is not known, but Franciscan monks were already living there at around 1500. The temple knew some modifications, and thus in 1549 the nave was enlarged with a crossed vault which forms the presbitery. In 1580, Dominic father Miguel Vilaplana was authorised to erect there a convent with twelve friars of said order, who created the Virgin of the Rosario fraternity. This Order, seven years after, and for security reasons, moved within the city, specifically to what is known nowadays as the Convent Church. Ibiza’s first bishop, Manuel Abad y Lasierra, raised to the category of parish church in 1785. It has a single nave, covered with a vault which in the presbiterian part becomes a crossed vault. It has a total of six lateral chapels, the first of which on the gospel side is qualified as deep. On the south side, the big structures added correspond to the rector and vicar houses. Such works were carried out in XVII and XVIII centuries. In the same line of the principal façade, on the north side, the porxo can be found, with four round arches. This is a structure built out at the end of XIX century or already in the XX century. The temple of Jesus still keeps some works of art, obviously religious, such as the image of the Virgin by Antonio Saura of the XVI century and a painting of Saint Clare of the XVII century, amongst others. But, the altarpiece in the presbitery, behind the altar, clearly stands out. It is one of the most important works of art kept in the Pitiusas islands. It was made at the Osona family workshop in Valencia, in the years between XV and XVI centuries. The altarpiece of the church of Jesus has been described by some experts in the art of this period as a cross where styles such as Renaissance and Flemish, together with the preceding long gothic tradition, come together. It has twenty-five different panels. The central one represents the Virgin enthroned nursing Jesus, and she is surrounded by images of Saint Peter apostle, Saint Marc, Saint John Baptist, Saint Francis of Asis, the representation of a saint dressed as a Franciscan and the mass of Saint Gregorio Pope. These seven panels, which form the central body, are as well surrounded by smaller ones. These represent themes such as the Annunciation, Jesus Nativity, Resurrection, the Ascension, or saints as Saint Sebastian, Saint Onofre, Saint Roque or Saint Bernard among others.
