Ile de Pain Bread & Café

Thesen Island

About

Atkins-dieters be warned. When Austrian chef-patron Markus Farbinger bakes, bread is all you'll want to eat! Whether it's his fresher-than-fresh potato bread, fluffy croissants, fragrant focaccia, crispy ciabattas, or signature companion (half-wheat, half-rye sourdough made with a 300-year-old starter dough), Markus makes you realize that there is something seriously wrong with the bland stuff you find in supermarkets. In addition, all the produce is free-range and from the farm, and the cappuccino is the best in town. You sit at long wooden tables, either under the trees or inside the rustic bakery, from where you can choose which of the daily sandwiches (don't miss the toasted baguette with figs, Gorgonzola, rocket, and balsamic reduction), salads, soups, light grills and sweet treats -- all chalked on the blackboard. Despite the limited menu, this is generally considered the best value restaurant in Knysna.
