About

The Irian Jaya Liberation Monument stands in the middle of the grassy Lapangan Banteng, in front of the Treasury Building. Fondly known to the locals as the Incredible Hulk, the statue portrays a muscular man breaking free from a chain and shackle (the personification of bondage), with his hands raised and open wide. Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, ordered its erection to commemorate the 1963 liberation of Irian Jaya (New Guinea) from the Dutch.
