The Mahaparinirvana temple is most famous in Kushinagar as it has a 6 meters long reclining statue of Buddha lying on his right side facing the west representing the image of Buddha leaving his soul or attaining  Nirvana. The statue is made up of monolith red sand stone. The reclining statue of Buddha was found during the excavations of 1876. The statue is placed on a large brick pedestal with stone posts at the corners. There is an inscription on it which states that this statue belongs to the 5th century. The reclining statue of Buddha is very lively and is the center of attraction of this temple.
