Mama Tembo

Greenside

About

In urbane Greenside, this lively, vibey township-themed restaurant -- more down-home than Lekgotla, where the food is more sophisticated -- belts music out of the sound system, and it's filled with colorful, whimsical design details and bits of art and kitsch. The menu includes typical South African items such as wors, skilpadjies (minced liver patties wrapped in caul), marrow bones, impala and ostrich stew, and the very highly regarded Chief's chicken curry. Generous cuts of well-aged beef are apparently ethically sourced from a Gauteng farm; look no further than The Pirates (of Orlando) rump. All main courses come with vegetables and a choice of pap, samp, or rice. It's definitely the most vibrant option in the 'burbs, and if you stay for the late-night carousing that sometimes sets in, you'll have more than a memorable meal to take home.
