Mandapeshwar Caves

Sanjay Gandhi National PArk

About

The Mandapeshwar Caves, like the more famous Elephanta Caves, are dedicated to Hindu God Shiva. There is a carving of Shiva as his incarnation Nataraja with celestial beings hovering over him. Inside the caves, there is a Garbhagriha or central shrine. The entrance of the caves is clearly visible from the street and has four pillars. The caves seem to have been carved around 600 AD, around the same time as the Elephanta Caves and perhaps by the same artisans.
