The Matsu Islands are a minor archipelago of 19 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait administered as Lienchiang County under Fujian Province of the Republic of China. It is the smallest county in the ROC.The Matsu Islands are second only to Kinmen in their proximity to the PRC a fact that explains the formidable displays of  military force on most of them. The archipelago is geographically, historically and culturally distinct from mainland Taiwan. Its inhabitants' ancestors.
