About

The Merlion is an imaginary creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, used as a mascot of Singapore. Its name combines "mer" meaning the sea and "lion". The fish body comes from Singapore's ancient name back when it was a fishing villageTemasek meaning "sea town" in Javanese. The lion head represents Singapore's original name Singapura meaning "lion city" or "kota singa".
The symbol was designed by Fraser Brunner, a member of the Souvenir Committee and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, for the logo of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in use from 26 March 1964 to 1997. The Merlion continues to be its trademark symbol since 20 July 1966.

"Merlion Park is very attractive in the evenings when it is illuminated and spouts water from its mouth .The park has great views of the Marina Bay Sands and has a beautiful and large water side statue. It is surely a must see place in Singapore but its very crowded." - By Lalitha Krishna, 21 Aug 2013

"No trip to Singapore would be complete without a visit to the iconic Merlion. Not only that, the park provides a panoramic view of the water and Marina Bay Sands. It is kind of a work out if you're walking from Esplanade to the Merlion park but I can assure you that it's worth it.Must Visit...." - By Priti Kumari, 21 Aug 2013
