Piazza Oberdan

About

Museo Civico del Risorgimento e Sacrario di Oberdan is located in a building that was specifically built for it, by the architect Umberto Nordio, between 1931 and 1935. On the side of the entrance visitors can see a reconstruction of the cell where Guglielmo Oberdan was imprisoned. He was a Trieste patriot, hung for making an attempt on the life of the Emperor Franz Joseph in 1882, when Trieste was ruled by Austria. On the first floor, documents, photos and relics of the Risorgimento are on display and a whole room is dedicated to Oberdan. There is also a place devoted to the volunteers who participated in the first world war, with interesting frescoes by Carlo Sbisa. The museum also boasts a rich archive of documents from the Second World War.
