About

Up in Vitacura, where some of the toniest homes in the city are located, behind a stone wall, lies the Museo de la Moda, or Fashion Museum. It's an internationally-acclaimed collection of woven, sewn, bedazzled clothing throughout the years, which the New York Times called one of the most important cultural spaces to have opened in recent years in Santiago. and they've recently instituted the use of audioguides (self-guided) in English, Spanish and Portuguese to accompany the exhibition called "Back to the 80s." Pieces of note include second world war uniforms, and the jacket from the movie Terminator. Other pieces such as Lady Di's black strapless gown in which she appeared after having become engagedto Prince Charles, and Marilyn Monroe's "mermaid dress" are in the collection but are not currenly on exhibition. The museum is in an old family home, the Casa Yarur Bacuñán, which was built in the early 1960s and converted into a museum recently. Photography is not permitted, and there is a bookstore selling books about fashion on site.
