Niteroi, Rio's sister city across Guanabara Bay, may lose out to Rio in the glamor stakes, but it does have plenty to offer the visitor. A case in point is this handsome neoclassical building, which today functions as a museum and art gallery. Permanent exhibits include works from Burle Marx and Di Calvacante, among others; as well as an impressive display of carved wooden statues. The building, which dates back to 1860, also houses beautiful antique furnishings and precious porcelain works. - Lucy Bryson
