National Maritime Museum
Jeollanam-do
About
This is the only maritime museum in the country and is dedicated to preserving and presenting Korea's rich maritime history. The first exhibit hall displays over 3,000 excavated relics from the "Underwater Cultural Heritage of Wando" and a replica wooden ship from the Goryeo Dynasty. The second hall is the "Underwater Cultural Heritage from Sinan" exhibit and includes over 22,000 items from Chinese ships of the 14th century. The third hall shows the "Life of a Korean Fishing Village," with displays of traditional and modern fishing methods. The last hall shows models of "Korean Traditional Boats," although modern ships, like oil tankers, are also included here. Nearby is one of Mokpo's Eight Scenic Locations, the Gatbawi. Not one but a pair of rocks east of the city's main harbor, the name comes from their shape, which resembles a satgat (a conical bamboo rain hat). The two boulders are Jeonbawi and Satgatbawi. According to a local story, the larger one is called the "father rock" while the smaller is the "son rock."
