O'Grady's Guesthouse is a purpose-built bed and breakfast on Clare Island, County Mayo, located close to the harbour and Grace O’Malley's, better known as the Pirate Queen's, 15th century castle. Situated a stones throw from a blue flag sandy beach, the site holds sentimental value as the previous dwelling was home to generations of O’Gradys. Indeed, to maintain the historical link, the original stone has been incorporated into the face of the house. Established in May 2006 O'Grady's offer six luxury ensuite rooms, comfortable TV lounge and spacious dining area. The house consists of six rooms with both double and single beds and one double room with disability facilities. All rooms are equipped with ensuite bathrooms, tea/coffee making facilities and TV. Hairdryer, iron and ironing board are available on request. The B&B is run by husband and wife team Helen and Alan O’Grady. Helen handles bookings and the day-to-day running of the house while Alan is busy on the family-run ferry. Full and half-day fishing trips may be booked on board the Restorick II. Lobsters are a special treat and when available you may choose your own from our lobster pots if you wish.A sightseeing boat journey can be arranged by O'Gradys and is a wonderful opportunity for bird watchers to view nesting sea birds on the spectacular cliffs to the west and north of the Island. Dolphins and seals are regularly spotted in the waters. A trip to the organic salmon fish farms is also en route.For keener water lovers, swimming and snorkeling are favourite pastimes on the beautiful beach and Clare Island’s offshore waters host the perfect environment for any scuba diver. Day trips are available but need plenty of notice in order to make arrangements. For the experienced walker they have included a small guide of five different walks or for a more leisurely stroll, why not visit the sandy beach, or taking a five minute walk to the Bay View Hotel to enjoy the famous Guinness is always an enjoyable option. A cycling tour of the island, with bike hire near the pier, should definitely entertain those feeling energetic and adventurous for several hours.For the less energetic a scenic tour of the island can be arranged by taxi. This tour takes in historical features such as the Lighthouse, Grace O’Malley’s 15th century Castle, a 12th century Cistercian Abbey and a Napoleanic Signal Tower.
