The renovation of Pedion tou Areos, a park acting as a thoroughfare between the areas of Kypseli, Exarchia, Patission Street and Gyzi, is due to be completed in November 2010. The architectural offices of Alexandros Tombazis and Harry Bougadellis undertook the renovation with the goal of maintaining the nostalgic feel of the park which was created in 1934, in which 230,000 square meters of parkland encompasses two Orthodox churches, an "Avenue of the Heroes" with busts of Greek Revolutionary War figures, some refreshment areas and a sprawling network of shady paths. A "Minoan labyrinth" created with plants native to Attica is intended to be completed along with restoration of the many statues and fountains. You'll also see a newly planted olive grove in front of the stately statue of Athena. There are two entrances: One about off of Mavromateon Street, marked by a mounted King Constantine, the other on Alexandras Avenue marked by a memorial to the English, Australian, and New Zealander soldiers who fought in the Battle of Greece in World War II. Nearest Metro: Victoria Station. Walk two blocks along Chevden Street across Patission Street and take a right on Mavromateon.
