About

Pell Street is a part of what is still today a largely immigrant neighborhood. Many of the buildings that line the street date back 100 years or more, and are still in use by immigrants seeking affordable housing today. During the time when the Lower East Side was known as the Sixth Ward and when Pell Street was a part of the Five Points, its residents were a mix of Irish, German, Eastern European Jewish, Italian, and Scottish, with some native-born Americans and African-Americans thrown into the mix.
