				About

Postojna Cave is considered the cradle of speleobiology, the branch of biology that studies the subterranean world. Researchers estimate that up to 130 different species of animal live here. The Proteus Vivarium teaches visitors about the basic concepts and history of karstology and speleobiology, introduces them to special features of the subterranean environment, and gives them the chance to view the most characteristic specimens of cave fauna. Visitors watch a multimedia presentation on the karst and life in the underworld before viewing live specimens of cave fauna from Postojna Cave in the vivariums, where special attention is devoted to the most famous of them – the "human fish"or olm (Proteus anguinus).
