What now stands as the sculpture square has withnessed a long history, dating to pre-war times, First conceived as a Christian Institute by Charles Phillips in 1870, it was called the Middle Roach Church. Since then, it has been through many phases as the methodist Girls' School, the first Baba Malay Methodist Church in Singapore and a Chinese Eatery called "may Blossom Restaurant" During the japanese Occupation.
