- The language spoken by the people usually depends on which tribes they are from. And in Meghalaya there are three tribes Khasi, Garo and Jaintia.
- The principal languages in Shillong are Khasi, Pnar and Garo with English as the official language of the state. Though majority of the people speak Khasi as the city fall in the East Khasi Hills District and majority of the people here are from the Khasi tribes.
- Over the years people from all over the country especially the neighbouring states have inhabited the place so you will also find people speaking Hindi, Bengali, Nepali, Mizo, Nagamese, Manipuri and Assamese.
