About

Goddess Navadurga, a form of Goddess Parvati is the kuldevata of several Goud Saraswat Brahmin families, among others. Navadurga is also known as Mahishasura Mardini. It is believed that the Navdurga idol was earlier in Gavasi of Tiswadi Taluka, Goa; and it has existed there since the 10th century AD. Goddess Navdurga was shifted during the Portuguese raid in the 16th century, to Redi-Vengurla in the Sindhudurg Region of Maharashtra, close to the Maharashtra-Goa border. The temple is very close to the world famous Terekhol Fort of Goa. It has been believed that the idol of Navadurga has been here for more than 450 years.
