Basilica Bandel Church, one of the oldest Christian churches, is situated in West Bengal. Constructed around 1660, it is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. A ship's mast can be seen in front of the church. It is said that the captain of a ship, who was rescued by Mother Mary, presented the ship's mast to the church. This was given to the church in fulfilment of the gratitude for having survived the shipwreck. The church has three altars, several tombstones and a shrine to Mary who is known as Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Happy Voyage. A beautiful life sized statue of Mother of Sorrows in marble sitting with the body of Jesus on her lap can be seen here.
