About

Soka Gakkai (創価学会 (lit., "Value-Creation Society")) and/or Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is a lay Buddhist movement with 12 million members around the world. It has been described as "America's most diverse” [1] and “the largest Lay Buddhist movement in the world.”[2] The aim of SGI's members is integrate their Buddhist practice into their daily lives, following the Lotus Sutra based teachings of Nichiren, a 13th-century Japanese Buddhist priest. Founded by educator Tsunesaburō Makiguchi in 1930, the organization was suppressed during World War II for its opposition to the Japanese government’s consolidation of religious groups.[3] A significant comrade of Makiguchi, Jōsei Toda, who was released from prison in July 1945, took a leading role of responsibility for the organisation. In the following years, starting from 1951, he reformed the membership base of Soka Gakkai's 3,000 families to include more than 750,000 families before his death in 1958.
