About

The Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden (“Berlin State Opera”) combines 250 years of tradition, development and innovation unlike any other establishment in the city. The historical building on the Unter den Linden boulevard is a protected site and is going to be elaborately refurbished. As of the 2010|11 season, the Staatsoper Ensemble will therefore perform together with the Staatskapelle while the Schiller Theater undergoes a four year construction phase in Berlin-Charlottenburg. The Staatsoper’s new home features a modern layout and simple elegance. Opened in 1907, the Schiller Theater was a member of the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin (“Berlin State Drama Stages”) from 1951 until 1993 and the largest spoken theatre stage in the city. Recent years have seen the Schiller Theater mainly serve as a guest performance location for larger musical and theatre productions. The Staatsoper’s move saw the stage’s setup and technology adjusted according to the opera’s needs. The 2013|14 season is now the fourth for the Staatsoper at the Schiller Theater. Nine opera premières, including Rimsky-Korsakow’s “Die Zarenbraut” (The Tzar’s Bride), Giuseppe Verdi’s “Il trovatore” , Leoš Janáček’s “Katja Kabanowa”, Richard Wagner’s “Tannhäuser”, and Kurt Weill’s “Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny” (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny) are being staged by renowned directors such as Dmitri Tcherniakov, Sasha Waltz, Philipp Stölzl, Andrea Breth, Nicolas Stemann, Vincent Boussard, and Katie Mitchell. Highly talented singers will grace the Staatsoper stage, singing everything from “Aida” to “Zauberflöte”. The Festtage 2014 The Festtage festival founded by Daniel Barenboim will again make Easter 2014 another highlight in the Berlin event calendar with two musical theatre productions and three concerts: great performers such as Peter Seiffert, Marina Poplavskaya, René Pape, Peter Mattei, Plácido Domingo, Anja Harteros, Fabio Sartori and many more will be on the opera stages in Sasha Waltz’s production of Richard Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” and Federico Tiezzi’s hit production of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra”. In the Berlin Philharmonic, you can go to see the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performing works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and at the symphony concert at the Staatskapelle Berlin Orchestra, Plácido Domingo will be performing as a soloist. The 2014 FESTTAGE programme (11 to 20 April 2014) will be rounded off by a piano performance with the great pianists Martha Argerich and Maestro Daniel Barenboim.
