Strandgasthaus Birner

47 An der Oberen Alte Donau

About

Vienna's last original beach pub and restaurant at the Alte Donau (Old Danube) is located on three terraces leading to the waterfront. Little has changed since Birner opened in the 1930s. Drinks are prepared in the garden beneath ancient trees. The menucard stresses suburban Viennese cuisine: a variety of meat dishes like Wiener Schnitzel and Schweins-Schnitzel or Bauernschmaus (featuring different slices of meat, a rather large dumpling and sauerkraut), some fish and a lot of snacks. Since the restaurant is located just across the street, motorists watch out for crossing waiters. The restaurant itself is cozy, old-fashioned, wood panelled, heated with three coal ovens, and a meeting place for ecologists and regulars.
